Get It out of Your Head<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Not too long ago, to-do lists on scraps of paper infiltrated every nook and cranny of my life&mdash;in my purse, on the fridge, in every drawer of my nightstand, tucked inside books I&rsquo;d started reading and forgotten about. Any piece of paper was fair game, from the backs of receipts to the instructions that come in a box of tampons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But my kingdom of paper scraps was stressing me out. From the book <a title=\"Getting Things Done\" href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/ToBtEU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Getting Things Done<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/ToBtEU\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"166\" height=\"250\" src=\"https:\/\/happyyouhappyfamily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/gtd1.jpg\" alt=\"Getting Things Done\" class=\"wp-image-827\" srcset=\"https:\/\/happyyouhappyfamily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/gtd1.jpg 166w, https:\/\/happyyouhappyfamily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/gtd1-132x200.jpg 132w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 166px) 100vw, 166px\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/happyyouhappyfamily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/gtd1.jpg\"><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;The short-term memory part of your mind&mdash;the part that tends to hold all of the incomplete, undecided, and unorganized &ldquo;stuff&rdquo;&mdash;functions much like RAM on a personal computer. Your conscious mind, like the computer screen, is a focusing tool, <strong>not a storage place<\/strong>. You can think about only two or three things at once. But the incomplete items are still being stored in the short-term-memory space. And as with RAM, there&rsquo;s limited capacity; there&rsquo;s only so much &ldquo;stuff&rdquo; you can store in there and still have that part of your brain function at a high level. Most people walk around with their RAM <strong>bursting at the seams<\/strong>. They&rsquo;re constantly distracted, their focus disturbed by their own internal mental overload&hellip;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This produces an all-pervasive stress factor whose source can&rsquo;t be pinpointed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you&rsquo;ve already decided on the next step you&rsquo;ll take to resolve a problem, your mind can&rsquo;t let go until and unless you write yourself a reminder <strong>in a place it knows<\/strong> you will, without fail, look.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<cite>David Allen<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The solution? Have one place where you get all those to-dos out of your head. I&rsquo;m personally smitten with <a title=\"Evernote\" href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/evernote\/id281796108?mt=8&amp;uo=4&amp;at=10l5G8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Evernote<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Set a timer for 25 minutes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sit down with Evernote or your list-keeper of choice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Write down everything you need to get done.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If you think of something an hour later, add it to the list. If you&rsquo;re lying in bed and can&rsquo;t sleep because you&rsquo;re thinking about that bill that&rsquo;s overdue, add it to the list so you can sleep!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(By the way, this is one of the reasons I love <a title=\"Evernote\" href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/evernote\/id281796108?mt=8&amp;uo=4&amp;at=10l5G8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Evernote<\/a>&mdash;I can access it from my phone or any computer, and my lists all automagically stay in sync.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-say-no\">2. But you&rsquo;ll have more time later, right? Wrong. According to a <a title=\"12 Straightforward Ways to Say 'No'\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wisebread.com\/12-straightforward-ways-to-say-no\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study on time perceptions<\/a>, we typically &ldquo;imagine that we&rsquo;ll be less busy in the future.&rdquo; But we are mistaken. Later is like a mirage in the desert. When you get there, you realize it was a trick of the mind, and now you&rsquo;re screwed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stop telling yourself you&rsquo;ll have more time later. <strong>It&rsquo;s a lie.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For all those things you think you&rsquo;ll get to &ldquo;one day,&rdquo; you probably won&rsquo;t. And every time you push it out, you&rsquo;ll be disappointed in yourself. Those undone tasks will weigh on you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take a <strong>hard look<\/strong> at your list and decide what you won&rsquo;t get to. Then cross them off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now you can focus on what&rsquo;s most important for you to get done without those other tasks hanging over your head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can&rsquo;t bring yourself to delete something from your list, make a new Someday\/Maybe list and move it to that. Remember Three Is a Magic Number<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You made your big master to-do list (step #1). You cut it down to what you really need to get done (step #2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it&rsquo;s still kind of long and overwhelming, isn&rsquo;t it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where you&rsquo;ll need MITs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MIT = <a title=\"Today&rsquo;s Most Important Tasks\" href=\"https:\/\/theartofsimple.net\/worst-thing-first-eat-that-frog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Most Important Task<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look at your list, and pick three tasks that are most important to get done today. <strong>Just three.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pick the things that MUST happen today. If you finish these MITs, you will consider the day a success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, here are my MITs from Monday:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Send invitations for work event I&rsquo;m hosting in two weeks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pay dentist bill.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pick up dessert. (Because no day is a success without dessert.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Notice how I mixed work and personal items. Your 3 MITs should be for your whole day. Do <strong>not<\/strong> make one MIT list for work and one for home because you&rsquo;ll lose focus on the most important things that must happen today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can always do more than your MITs, but those should happen first. Before you check email or return your mom&rsquo;s phone call from last night and get roped into an hour-long conversation&mdash;do your MITs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-make-one-task-your-universe\">4. Make One Task Your Universe<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As it turns out, <a title=\"What Multitasking Does To Your Brain\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3019659\/leadership-now\/what-multitasking-does-to-your-brain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">multitasking is not a good thing<\/a>. Switching between tasks makes everything take LONGER. Multitasking increases the amount of time it takes to finish your primary task <a title=\"The Energy Project - Key Ideas\" href=\"http:\/\/theenergyproject.com\/key-ideas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">by an average of 25%<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quiet the swirling to-do list in your head and focus on one thing at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&rsquo;re <a title=\"Return Everything You Bought Because Here&rsquo;s the Perfect Gift\" href=\"https:\/\/happyyouhappyfamily.com\/2013\/12\/perfect-gift\/\">raking leaves<\/a> but you have a gabazillion other things on your list, accept the fact that <strong>you chose<\/strong> to rake leaves right now. Notice the crunch of the leaves, the dappled sunlight falling through the trees, the cold grip of the rake on your hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make that task your universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-take-a-walk\">5. Take a Walk<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone knows exercise is good for relieving stress. But when I&rsquo;m feeling overwhelmed, exercise is just another item on my list to stress me out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The perfectionist in me pictures an hour of cardio followed by strength training. So because I can&rsquo;t do the perfect workout, I do nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here are two reasons that&rsquo;s wrong-headed of me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can get a powerful workout in 10 minutes. Or less. Here&rsquo;s a <a title=\"The Scientific 7-Minute Workout\" href=\"http:\/\/well.blogs.nytimes.com\/2013\/05\/09\/the-scientific-7-minute-workout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">7-minute workout<\/a> that&rsquo;s comparable to several hours of running or biking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exercise isn&rsquo;t just about staying healthy and pumping endorphins. When you&rsquo;re stressed, you need the break.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Which brings me to&hellip;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-goof-off\">6. Goof Off<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a title=\"The Energy Project - Key Ideas\" href=\"http:\/\/theenergyproject.com\/key-ideas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Humans are not computers.<\/a> We&rsquo;re not meant to run at high speeds being super productive for long stretches of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From <a title=\"You can do anything - but not everything\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/40384\/you-can-do-anything-not-everything\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">productivity guru David Allen<\/a>, author of <a title=\"Getting Things Done\" href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/ToBtEU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Getting Things Done<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&ldquo;You have to back off and be quiet. Retreat from the task at hand, so that you can gain a new perspective on what you&rsquo;re doing. If you get too wrapped up in all of the stuff coming at you, you <strong>lose your ability<\/strong> to respond appropriately and effectively. If your inbox and your outbox are completely full, or if people are screaming at you, then it&rsquo;s difficult to back off and think about things at a different level.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<cite>David Allen<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you weren&rsquo;t super stressed, all those tasks and decisions you make throughout the day wear on your brain. A short break gives your brain <a title=\"8 Reasons Why You Should Definitely Take That Lunch Break\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3027496\/work-smart\/8-reasons-why-you-should-definitely-take-that-lunch-break\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a chance to recuperate<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every day, take at least <strong>one deliberate break<\/strong>. If you can afford more, even better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few ideas to get you off the stress train and give you a healthier perspective:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Take a walk. (Which takes care of #5 too. SCORE.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leave your desk for lunch. <a title=\"8 Reasons Why You Should Definitely Take That Lunch Break\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3027496\/work-smart\/8-reasons-why-you-should-definitely-take-that-lunch-break\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">It&rsquo;s important.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have a snack and don&rsquo;t do anything else but focus on the flavors and textures of the food. This productivity hack solves the problem of how multitasking makes everything take longer. It forces you to focus on one thing at a time AND gives your brain consistent breaks. Here&rsquo;s how it works:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pick one task to focus on, and set a timer for 25 minutes. You can use a simple timer on your phone, or try a special Pomodoro app like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.focusboosterapp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Focus Booster<\/a> (Windows and Mac OS) or <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/workburst-a-pomodoro-timer\/id824789341?mt=12&amp;uo=4&amp;at=10l5G8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WorkBurst<\/a> (Mac OS).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work until your time&rsquo;s up. Don&rsquo;t check Facebook, don&rsquo;t check email&mdash;just focus on that one task. (Sensing a theme?)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take a short break, like 5 minutes. And live it up! Play Candy Crush, call your honey, or tweet to your heart&rsquo;s content.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeat steps 1-3, and every 4th time take a longer 10-minute break.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>I use the Pomodoro Technique when I&rsquo;m feeling overwhelmed at work, and I always feel so GOOD afterwards. Productive but not burnt out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-keep-a-done-list\">7.
