Plus, I don&rsquo;t keep much cash on hand and whatever I do have goes toward my afternoon vending machine habit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My swearing meant <strong>no more<\/strong> Reese&rsquo;s peanut butter cups. With that grin again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;Hate&rsquo;s not a bad word,&rdquo; I said. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s just not a nice word.&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;You need to give me a quarter,&rdquo; she insisted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;No, I don&rsquo;t. Hate isn&rsquo;t a bad word. I can say hate.&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She didn&rsquo;t trust me. When we got home, she repeated the story to Ty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I gave him the eyes. The point is not for you to get excited every time I say a bad word.&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;Oh,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I finished putting together her lunch, thinking of what to do with my sailor tendencies. Because when the swear jar isn&rsquo;t the answer for how to stop swearing, what <em>does<\/em> work?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I could try <strong>replacing<\/strong> the curse words with something inoffensive&mdash;&ldquo;fiddlesticks&rdquo; or &ldquo;bugger&rdquo; or &ldquo;cursed monkey pants.&rdquo; I do love a good &ldquo;bugger&rdquo; every now and then, but it just doesn&rsquo;t roll off the tongue the way the s-word does when you stub your toe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And over time if everyone used &ldquo;cursed monkey pants&rdquo; instead of &ldquo;motherf&rsquo;ing&rdquo;, doesn&rsquo;t &ldquo;cursed monkey pants&rdquo; turn into a swear as well?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the drive home from school that afternoon, I asked her, &ldquo;What makes a word a bad word?&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s a word you&rsquo;re not supposed to say,&rdquo; she explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;Is &lsquo;poppycock&rsquo; a bad word?&rdquo; I stifled a giggle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She paused. &ldquo;No?&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;Well, what makes a person a bad person?&rdquo; I didn&rsquo;t know where I was going with this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;If they do something bad. Like if they hurt someone or steal something.&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;So it&rsquo;s how someone acts that makes them a bad person or a good person?&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;Yes,&rdquo; she said with confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was quiet for a bit. Then: &ldquo;You know, words might be the same way.&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;How a word acts makes it bad?&rdquo; she asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;Kinda. It&rsquo;s how you use a word that makes it bad. It was pretty dusty because: 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;C&rsquo;mere,&rdquo; I said to my daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She sidled up next to me, and I thumbed through the thin pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;These are all the words in the English language,&rdquo; I said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;All of them?&rdquo; Her eyes got big.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I nodded. &ldquo;There&rsquo;s nothing wrong with any of these words. They&rsquo;re just a bunch of letters mushed together. But if you said certain words to people, you might hurt their feelings.&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She stared at me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I tried <strong>again<\/strong>. &ldquo;Like if you told me you didn&rsquo;t love me, that would hurt, right?&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;Yes,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;So when we talk about &lsquo;bad&rsquo; words or swear words, all it means is that those are words that could hurt people&rsquo;s feelings.&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;Adults can use bad words as long as they&rsquo;re not hurting anyone. But a bad word coming from a kid would probably hurt someone&rsquo;s feelings. I was glancing back every couple minutes, but she was fine. Playing with her big sister&rsquo;s art easel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then&hellip;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CRASH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My heart stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;Shit!&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I jumped up and ran to where I&rsquo;d last spied my youngest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There she sat on the floor, in shock. The easel had collapsed and crashed to the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Away from her.
