At least daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of my kids would do something less than desirable, we tried to engage them in a conversation about it, and they pouted and ran away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>problem<\/strong> is I can totally understand where they&rsquo;re coming from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even after 45 years of making mistakes, I still don&rsquo;t like being told I&rsquo;ve done something &ldquo;wrong.&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But one of my goals as a parent is to raise our kids to know how to deal with conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I had to learn that lesson the <strong>hard <\/strong>way as an adult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my sophomore year of college, my roommate and I had an argument. I don&rsquo;t even remember what we were arguing about. Probably something important like me polishing off the last of the Fruity Pebbles without replacing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But we both stopped talking to each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>On move-out day, we didn&rsquo;t even say <strong>goodbye<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The silent treatment? Not so effective, as it turns out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"eureka\">My Eureka Moment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>That night, as I nursed the baby and stewed about my oldest running away from a tough conversation <em>again<\/em>, I tried to think of another approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Running after her and trying to engage her in conversation <strong>never <\/strong>worked. We&rsquo;re just talking.&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She rounded the corner to the dining room. &ldquo;Talking about it makes me sad.&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I threw my head back, took a deep breath, and brought my head level again. (I even have a <a title=\"Follow me on Pinterest\" href=\"http:\/\/pinterest.com\/kellyjholmes\/playful-parenting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pinterest board named after it<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One part that came back to me in that moment is the idea of a &ldquo;time-in&rdquo; instead of a &ldquo;time-out.&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&rsquo;s the gist of it: When your child does or says something that you don&rsquo;t like, use that as a teachable moment. Don&rsquo;t banish them to their room or a corner to stew in their own stress hormones because they won&rsquo;t learn anything lasting that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In that difficult moment, <strong>choose to connect<\/strong> with your kid. She toddled off in the direction of the living room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I pulled out the chair next to my big kid and sat down. She stared down at the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;I have an idea,&rdquo; I said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;What.&rdquo; Monotone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;How about next time you feel so sad you want to run away, you come and sit on my lap instead?&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She looked up. <strong>Definitely<\/strong> not what she was expecting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;Can you do that for me?&rdquo; I asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She nodded. Then without saying a word, she stood up and climbed into my lap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, we talked about what happened. It was a tough conversation, but she didn&rsquo;t run away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And because she didn&rsquo;t run away, I didn&rsquo;t get frustrated and lose my patience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We managed to have a CALM tough conversation, for the <strong>first time ever<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I asked questions like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&ldquo;What if a friend at school trips and falls down? Is it kind to laugh?&rdquo; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&ldquo;What if I had laughed first when she kicked me? Would it be okay for you to laugh then?&rdquo; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&ldquo;What if a friend laughs at you falling down? And <strong>every time<\/strong> ends with a hug and smiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next time your kid deals with a tough situation by running away, try suggesting they come and sit with you instead.
