So that delicious feeling at the start of the summer where you have nothing to do and all the time in the world to do it in?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Gone.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its place, we have 7:00 am departures breathing down our necks. Early bedtime, which means an early dinner, which means next to <strong>zero<\/strong> fun free time as a family on weeknights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And&hellip;HOMEWORK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To prolong the magic of summer, I took a day off work during our last week with our oldest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wanted to do something special with the girls, but I didn&rsquo;t want to swing <strong>too far<\/strong> in the other direction of overscheduling us, <a title=\"Don&rsquo;t Let Your Summer Bucket List Stress You Out&mdash;Make This Instead\" href=\"https:\/\/happyyouhappyfamily.com\/2014\/06\/summer-bucket-list\/\">turning me into That Mom<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&ldquo;Kids, hurry up! Talk It Up<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One surefire way to make your kids happy is to <a title=\"How To Have A Happy Family&mdash;7 Tips Backed By Research\" href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/21296\/how-to-have-a-happy-family-7-tips-backed-by-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">let them have a say<\/a> in how they&rsquo;ll be spending their time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&ldquo;[Kids] who plan their own time, set weekly goals, and evaluate their own work build up their prefrontal cortex and other parts of the brain that help them exert greater cognitive control over their lives. The simple act of <a title=\"What a Great Trip! And I&rsquo;m Not Even There Yet\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/05\/11\/travel\/what-a-great-trip-and-im-not-even-there-yet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anticipating something fun<\/a> will boost their happiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&ldquo;[Social] scientists have been saying for years that we get an extra happiness boost if we consciously <strong>delay<\/strong> any type of pleasure&mdash;be it booking a trip to Bali months in advance or eating that sliver of chocolate cake tomorrow instead of today. Doing this allows us to build up positive expectations, to relish how enjoyable the experience might be.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a title=\"10 Simple, Science-Backed Ways To Be Happier Today\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3015486\/how-to-be-a-success-at-everything\/10-simple-science-backed-ways-to-be-happier-today\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one study<\/a>, people who thought about watching their favorite movie&mdash;they didn&rsquo;t actually <strong>watch<\/strong> it&mdash;raised their endorphin levels by 27 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Try This:<\/strong> Before a special day or just a weekend day&mdash;talk through your plan with your child. Give them a chance to pick what they want to do, even if it&rsquo;s just choosing the order of the errands you have to run. And if you have <strong>anything fun<\/strong> on the agenda, talk it up! Point out the specifics you&rsquo;re looking forward to, and ask your kid what they&rsquo;re excited about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-hug-it-out\">2. Hug It Out<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a title=\"Much Happier: 8 things to do every day that will make you much happier\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bakadesuyo.com\/2013\/02\/checklist-8-day-happier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one article<\/a>, I came across a study where people assigned to give or receive hugs five times a day ended up <strong>happier<\/strong> than the non-hugging grumps in the control group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This tip seemed almost TOO simple. Who needs a reminder to hug their family?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We added &ldquo;give five hugs&rdquo; to the plan for our day&mdash;easy peasy. First thing in the morning when we read through our plan, we gave each other a great big bear hug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Good stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But by dinnertime, we realized that was the <strong>only<\/strong> hug we shared all day. Oops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So then we had a rapid-fire hugging session that devolved into giggles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Try This:<\/strong> Make it a goal to give five hugs. And make them good hugs! Get It Over With in 7 Minutes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>My whole adult life, I&rsquo;ve <strong>never<\/strong> been able to motivate myself to do this particular thing on a regular basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, it&rsquo;s <a title=\"What Happens to Our Brains When We Exercise and How It Makes Us Happier\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.bufferapp.com\/why-exercising-makes-us-happier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">incredibly important for happiness<\/a>. And I need to break the cycle so my girls don&rsquo;t have such an aversion to it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Bugger.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here&rsquo;s the good news. All you really need is <strong>7 minutes<\/strong> a day with <a title=\"The Scientific 7-Minute Workout\" href=\"http:\/\/well.blogs.nytimes.com\/2013\/05\/09\/the-scientific-7-minute-workout\/?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this scientific workout<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or if you&rsquo;d rather do something else, you just need 20 minutes of activity to <a title=\"What Happens to Our Brains When We Exercise and How It Makes Us Happier\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.bufferapp.com\/why-exercising-makes-us-happier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">get the happiness boost<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&rsquo;s what we did on our awesome day: we cranked up some <a title=\"12 Songs for a Carefree Summer\" href=\"https:\/\/happyyouhappyfamily.com\/2014\/06\/songs-summer-playlist\/\">summer tunes<\/a> and had a <a title=\"12 Songs for a Rockin&rsquo; Family Dance Party\" href=\"https:\/\/happyyouhappyfamily.com\/2014\/03\/12-songs-family-dance-party-kids\/\">family dance party<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Try This:<\/strong> Find a fun way to move your bodies, from taking a family walk to throwing in a yoga DVD. (My oldest loves <a title=\"Yoga Kids DVD\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00062DKMM\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B00062DKMM&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=idealmom-20&amp;linkId=MH2USHNAOEU656O4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yoga Kids<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-pick-5-small-acts\">4. Pick 5 Small Acts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Helping others has one of the <a title=\"10 Simple, Science-Backed Ways To Be Happier Today\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3015486\/how-to-be-a-success-at-everything\/10-simple-science-backed-ways-to-be-happier-today\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biggest impacts to your happiness<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even <a title=\"Science Shows You How To Raise Happy Kids\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lifehack.org\/articles\/communication\/science-shows-you-how-raise-happy-kids.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kids get a boost<\/a> from giving to others:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&ldquo;Studies show that even toddlers are happier when giving treats to others than receiving treats. (And they&rsquo;re <strong>happier<\/strong> giving away treats that belong to them than identical treats that don&rsquo;t!)&rdquo;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>But you don&rsquo;t have to volunteer 40 hours a week to get a boost from giving. In fact, it may be <strong>better<\/strong> to save up all your generous acts for <a title=\"6 Secrets You Can Learn From The Happiest People On Earth\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bakadesuyo.com\/2013\/12\/happiest-people-on-earth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one day a week<\/a>. In one study, people who performed five giving acts all in a single day increased happiness. People who performed one giving act every day saw no increase in happiness&mdash;the giving became routine and meaningless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Try This:<\/strong> Brainstorm small things you and your child can do for others, and execute on five of them. You can find a ton of ideas on <a title=\"Follow me on Pinterest\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/kellyjholmes\/playful-parenting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my Playful Parenting board<\/a> on Pinterest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We decided to make playdough&mdash;which we&rsquo;d never done before. It didn&rsquo;t quite come together as a full-on playdough (more like damp baking soda), and I hyperventilated as the baby left cute little footprints of pink dough all across the living room rug. Still, we had fun!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-chow-down\">6. Chow Down<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We&rsquo;ve all heard it&rsquo;s a good idea to have dinner as a family, but here&rsquo;s <a title=\"How To Have A Happy Family&mdash;7 Tips Backed By Research\" href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/21296\/how-to-have-a-happy-family-7-tips-backed-by-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">why it&rsquo;s important<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&ldquo;Kids who have dinner with their families do better across pretty much <strong>every<\/strong> conceivable metric&hellip;[Children] who enjoy family meals have larger vocabularies, better manners, healthier diets, and higher self-esteem. The most comprehensive survey done on this topic&hellip;discovered that the amount of time children spent eating meals at home was the single <strong>biggest<\/strong> predictor of better academic achievement and fewer behavioral problems. Mealtime was more influential than time spent in school, studying, attending religious services, or playing sports.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&rsquo;t forget to turn off the television and put away the phones&mdash;talk about your day, tell family stories, and listen to your kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Try This:<\/strong> Eat dinner as a family. Dinnertime too chaotic at your house? Think Back<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In my research on happy days for kids, one thing kept popping up <a title=\"Write Down Three Positive Things About Each Day, Every Day\" href=\"http:\/\/lifehacker.com\/5975693\/write-down-three-positive-things-about-each-day-every-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over and over<\/a> and <a title=\"Good Parenting Skills: 7 Research-Backed Ways to Raise Kids Right\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bakadesuyo.com\/2013\/11\/good-parenting-skills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over again<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A gratitude journal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&ldquo;In one celebrated example, &hellip;college students [were asked] to keep a gratitude journal&mdash;over ten weeks, the undergrads listed five things that had happened in the last week which they were thankful for. The results were <strong>surprisingly<\/strong> powerful&mdash;the students who kept the gratitude journal were 25% happier, were more optimistic about the future, and got sick less often during the controlled trial. Or they can dictate while you write for them. Even though I could have used more sleep and way more coffee, we were happy. Then my husband&rsquo;s paternity leave ended, and I was at home with the kids all day. As time wore on, my patience became <em>razor<\/em> thin.
