Also includes a printable planner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every year on the morning after Thanksgiving, we pick out a Christmas tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And before you get the wrong idea: We <strong>don&rsquo;t<\/strong> drive out to the country and pull it up by the roots, <em>National Lampoon<\/em> style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We get our tree at a grocery store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&rsquo;s cheap, it comes with a mini tabletop tree for our girls to decorate, and nobody gets frostbite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year though, the temperature was in the mid-40s with buckets pouring from the sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But a tradition is a tradition. So we bundled up our toddler and infant &ndash; it wasn&rsquo;t <a href=\"https:\/\/happyyouhappyfamily.com\/every-other-week-breaks-me\/\">our week with 7-year-old<\/a> &ndash; and we set out on a completely <strong>miserable<\/strong> morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, our toddler was too young to understand any of the Christmas hullabaloo, but at two-and-a-half this year it&rsquo;s a different story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We parked at the store, and Ty reached to the backseat for the umbrella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I checked my floorboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our eyes met, and we both realized it at the <strong>same time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At home, we&rsquo;d cleared out the trunk to fit the tree and forgot to stick the umbrella somewhere else in the car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wondered: <em>How bad would it be to just pull up alongside the tree tent and have them load one, sight unseen?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;Maybe we can come back a little later,&rdquo; Ty suggested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the backseat in the <strong>most<\/strong> angelic voice you could imagine, our toddler repeated: &ldquo;Come back later?&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I smiled at Ty, and we knew our fate was sealed. But I was soaked. The cold wind cut right through to my bones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then I looked down at my toddler standing beside me, and I&rsquo;ve <strong>never<\/strong> seen her eyes that big before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that smile! I felt a tug at the corners of my mouth and looked around me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This wasn&rsquo;t even an impressive display of trees. It was a <em>grocery<\/em> store. Ninety-five percent of the trees were still bundled up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, did I mention? Wet. Cold. And also in case I forgot to explain: wet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;How about that one?&rdquo; Ty pointed and asked our toddler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;Yeah!&rdquo; she yelled while clapping and jumping up and down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I looked where he was pointing. My hand caught part of her jacket, and I realized she must be soaked, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I led her to another tree. &ldquo;This one looks a little bigger. How about this?&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And again: &ldquo;Yeah!&rdquo; Clapping. Jumping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I shook my head and chuckled. &ldquo;Too much cuteness.&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;Yep,&rdquo; Ty said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tent attendant started to work on bundling up our tree for the road. &ldquo;Don&rsquo;t forget your tabletop tree,&rdquo; he reminded us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;Oh yeah,&rdquo; I said. Then to my toddler: &ldquo;Are you ready to pick out the tree for your room with big sis?&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her jaw dropped until her mouth made a perfect circle. &ldquo;For my room?&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;Uh-huh,&rdquo; I said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;Right now?&rdquo; she asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;Right now,&rdquo; I said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clapping. Pure happiness because of the simple joys this season brings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A tree? Right now? For me?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In that moment, she didn&rsquo;t even realize she&rsquo;d get to string lights on the tree or hang ornaments or shoo the cats away from drinking the tree water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I can&rsquo;t even <strong>imagine<\/strong> her face when she sees the first <em>present<\/em> under the tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take joy in the small pleasures that come your way. Empty the Snow Globe That Is Your Head<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I used to write to-do lists on every scrap of paper I could find &ndash; in my purse, on the kitchen counter, tucked inside books I&rsquo;d started reading and lost interest in. Any piece of paper was fair game, from bill envelopes to the leftover construction paper scraps from my kids&rsquo; art projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this kind of disjointed to-do list is actually a major source of stress. Your conscious mind, like the computer screen, is a focusing tool, <strong>not a storage place<\/strong>. You can think about only two or three things at once. But the incomplete items are still being stored in the short-term-memory space. And as with RAM, there&rsquo;s limited capacity; there&rsquo;s only so much &ldquo;stuff&rdquo; you can store in there and still have that part of your brain function at a high level. Most people walk around with their RAM <strong>bursting at the seams<\/strong>. They&rsquo;re constantly distracted, their focus disturbed by their own internal mental overload&hellip;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This produces an all-pervasive stress factor whose source can&rsquo;t be pinpointed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you&rsquo;ve already decided on the next step you&rsquo;ll take to resolve a problem, your mind can&rsquo;t let go until and unless you write yourself a reminder <strong>in a place it knows<\/strong> you will, without fail, look.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"meta-desc\"><sup>&dagger;<\/sup> This site is reader-supported. Don&rsquo;t let that get in the way of enjoying the holiday season with your family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&rsquo;s the fix: Have <strong>one place<\/strong> where you get all those to-dos out of your head. I&rsquo;m personally smitten with <a title=\"Evernote\" href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/evernote\/id281796108?mt=8&amp;uo=4&amp;at=10l5G8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Evernote<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Set a timer for 25 minutes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sit down with Evernote or your list-keeper of choice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Write down everything you need to get done.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If you think of something an hour later, add it to the list. The Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B001DPHDBA\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B001DPHDBA&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=imholidaystress-20&amp;linkId=3JGMGWKXP4I7M3DD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Santa Clause trilogy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three really is a magic number, and that&rsquo;s why every day you&rsquo;ll pick three MITs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MIT = <a title=\"Today&rsquo;s Most Important Tasks\" href=\"https:\/\/theartofsimple.net\/worst-thing-first-eat-that-frog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Most Important Task<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You de-snow-globed your head to make a master to-do list, but it&rsquo;s probably kind of long and overwhelming. The solution? MITs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&rsquo;s how: Look at your master list, and pick three tasks that are most important to get done today. <strong>Just three.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pick the things that MUST happen today. If you finish these MITs, you will consider the day a success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, here are my MITs from Monday:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Order books for the girls&rsquo; Christmas presents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Design a free printable planner page to go along with this post.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reserve dog boarding for our holiday travel.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Notice how I listed work and personal items together. Your 3 MITs should be for your whole day. Avoid making one MIT list for work and one for home because you&rsquo;ll lose focus on the <strong>most important<\/strong> things that must happen today &ndash; plus you&rsquo;ll probably procrastinate both lists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can always do more than your MITs, but those should happen first. I should bake cookies for neighbor presents. I should deep-clean the house before family visits. I should fill out the Advent calendar with super fun family activities. I should&hellip;&rdquo;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stop.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First of all, I already gotcha covered on the <a href=\"https:\/\/happyyouhappyfamily.com\/advent-calendar\/\">Advent calendar<\/a> front. (Get my free holiday activity cards inside that post, and you&rsquo;re DONE.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So eliminate &ldquo;should&rdquo; from your vocabulary during the holiday season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&rsquo;s the problem with &ldquo;should&rdquo;ing: <a title=\"12 Straightforward Ways to Say 'No'\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wisebread.com\/12-straightforward-ways-to-say-no\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Research on time perceptions<\/a> shows that we typically &ldquo;imagine that we&rsquo;ll be less busy in the future.&rdquo; And because of that, we take on more and more tasks and projects thinking we&rsquo;ll have time &ldquo;later.&rdquo; But we&rsquo;re wrong. We&rsquo;re just as busy &ldquo;later&rdquo; as we are right now &ndash; if not moreso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stop telling yourself you&rsquo;ll have more time later. <strong>It&rsquo;s a lie.<\/strong> For all those things you think you&rsquo;ll get to &ldquo;one day,&rdquo; you probably won&rsquo;t. And every time you think of it and how you haven&rsquo;t done it yet, you&rsquo;ll be disappointed in yourself. Those undone tasks weigh you down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saying you &ldquo;should&rdquo; do something dangles more tasks over your head like wannabe mistletoe, and it takes the focus off what&rsquo;s most important for you to get done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you catch yourself &ldquo;should&rdquo;ing, try <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/margiewarrell\/2014\/12\/11\/womens-holiday-stress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this brilliant holiday hack<\/a>: Change that &ldquo;should&rdquo; to &ldquo;could&rdquo; and add &ldquo;or&hellip;&rdquo; to the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, let&rsquo;s say you catch yourself saying this: &ldquo;I should knit homemade stockings for the whole family using wool I sheared myself at the sheep farm three hours outside of town.&rdquo; Stop that &ldquo;should&rdquo; in its reindeer tracks and say this: &ldquo;I <em>could<\/em> knit homemade stockings for the whole family, <em>or<\/em> I could pour myself another eggnog and order them from Amazon instead.&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/happyyouhappyfamily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/holiday-stress-raking-leaves.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" data-pin-id=\"128000814386807565\" data-pin-description=\"Say goodbye to holiday stress with these surefire holiday tips for parents. Make One Task Your Universe<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Contrary to popular belief, <a title=\"What Multitasking Does To Your Brain\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3019659\/leadership-now\/what-multitasking-does-to-your-brain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">multitasking is nothing to brag about<\/a>. Multitasking makes it harder for you to concentrate, and it adds to your stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even worse than that, constantly switching between tasks makes everything take <strong>longer<\/strong>. Multitasking increases the amount of time it takes to finish your primary task <a title=\"The Energy Project - Key Ideas\" href=\"http:\/\/theenergyproject.com\/key-ideas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">by an average of 25%<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pick one thing from your list and focus on that one task. If you struggle with this, try setting a timer for 20-30 minutes to help you focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&rsquo;re <a title=\"Return Everything You Bought Because Here&rsquo;s the Perfect Gift\" href=\"https:\/\/happyyouhappyfamily.com\/2013\/12\/perfect-gift\/\">raking leaves<\/a> but you have a gabazillion other things you should be doing right now &ndash; make that a gabazillion other things you <em>could<\/em> be doing right now &ndash; accept the fact that <strong>you chose<\/strong> to rake leaves right now. Think of This, Once a Day<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&rsquo;s the absolute <strong>best<\/strong> thing you can do to keep the holiday stress from getting to you: Think of what you&rsquo;re grateful for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1118131290\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1118131290&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=imholidaystress-20&amp;linkId=VCCCQF5CFBUG4ATQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gratitude Works: A 21-Day Program for Creating Emotional Prosperity<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Gratitude has one of the strongest links to mental health and satisfaction with life of any personality trait &ndash; more so than even optimism, hope, or compassion. Grateful people experience higher levels of positive emotions such as joy, enthusiasm, love, happiness, and optimism, and gratitude as a discipline protects us from the destructive impulses of envy, resentment, greed, and bitterness. People who experience gratitude can <strong>cope more effectively with everyday stress<\/strong>, show increased resilience in the face of trauma-induced stress, recover more quickly from illness, and enjoy more robust physical health.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>But it doesn&rsquo;t work if you focus on gratitude just once in a while. The effects will wear off, and you&rsquo;ll start taking things for granted again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must make gratitude part of your routine. As explained in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1118131290\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1118131290&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=imholidaystress-20&amp;linkId=VCCCQF5CFBUG4ATQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gratitude Works<\/a>, once a week is the bare minimum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the way, this is why the free printable planner page at the bottom of this post includes a section for recording what you&rsquo;re grateful for every day in December. In my family, we&rsquo;ve also started going around the table at dinnertime to share what everyone is grateful for &ndash; <strong>even<\/strong> the toddler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And here&rsquo;s a funny tidbit for you: As it turns out, it doesn&rsquo;t even matter if you can&rsquo;t think of something you&rsquo;re grateful for. I&rsquo;m embarrassed to admit it, but this happens to me <strong>all the time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example: The toddler is <a href=\"https:\/\/happyyouhappyfamily.com\/handle-kids-temper-tantrums\/\">throwing a tantrum<\/a> because she wants a snack five minutes before dinner&rsquo;s ready, the baby spit up all over me, and the dog just walked into the kitchen smacking her lips after a visit to the cats&rsquo; litter box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of screaming and running from the house, I try to <strong>catch<\/strong> myself in those moments and ask: &ldquo;What am I grateful for?&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1626251207\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1626251207&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=imholidaystress-20&amp;linkId=VXO5CTBGH6FE4JP6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Upward Spiral: Using Neuroscience to Reverse the Course of Depression, One Small Change at a Time<\/a>, I learned that if I can&rsquo;t think of anything in that moment, it&rsquo;s okay. I <em>still<\/em> get the benefits of a gratitude habit. Not only that, by continuing to ask myself that question, I&rsquo;m making it easier to answer myself the next time:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It&rsquo;s not finding gratitude that matters <strong>most<\/strong>; it&rsquo;s remembering to look in the first place. Remembering to be grateful is a form of emotional intelligence. One study found that it actually affected neuron density in both the ventromedial and lateral prefrontal cortex. These density changes suggest that as emotional intelligence increases, the neurons in these areas become more efficient. Drink Eggnog<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>During especially busy times like the holidays, your tendency may be to crank, crank, crank on your to-do list. But trying to be super productive for long stretches of time will actually hurt you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From <a title=\"You can do anything - but not everything\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/40384\/you-can-do-anything-not-everything\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">productivity guru David Allen<\/a>, author of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0143126563\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0143126563&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=imholidaystress-20&amp;linkId=GJKARNBN4K5L33YL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Getting Things Done<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&ldquo;You have to back off and be quiet. Retreat from the task at hand, so that you can gain a new perspective on what you&rsquo;re doing. If you get too wrapped up in all of the stuff coming at you, you <strong>lose your ability<\/strong> to respond appropriately and effectively. If your inbox and your outbox are completely full, or if people are screaming at you, then it&rsquo;s difficult to back off and think about things at a different level.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>What&rsquo;s more, all the tasks and decisions you make throughout the day wear on your brain. Your brain needs <a title=\"8 Reasons Why You Should Definitely Take That Lunch Break\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3027496\/work-smart\/8-reasons-why-you-should-definitely-take-that-lunch-break\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a chance to recuperate<\/a> so you don&rsquo;t turn into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000HKW7E0\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B000HKW7E0&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=imholidaystress-20&amp;linkId=UEKE446CSNPC4TNB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clark Griswold<\/a> after he opened his Jelly of the Month Club &ldquo;bonus.&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every day during this busy time, take at least <strong>one deliberate break<\/strong>.
