And so we leave the errands, the chores, the bill-paying for the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But by Monday morning, we feel like we need <em>a weekend from our weekend<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&rsquo;ve forgotten what weekends should be. Have a <strong>Do Nothing Day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take your to-do list, take all the errands you need to run, take the chores, all the things you &ldquo;should&rdquo; do&hellip;and <em>forget<\/em> them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just throw the whole list away for one day. The laundry will wait, I promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, you could sit on the floor and play LEGOs with your kids. Or take a long, hot bath. Read a trashy magazine about how much George Clooney&rsquo;s fictional divorce is costing. When you buy through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">But Here&rsquo;s the Mistake You Need to Avoid<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I first shared the idea of a Do Nothing Day on my Facebook page <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/happyyouhappyfamily\/photos\/a.1420250001526992.1073741828.1415370462014946\/1584499378435386\/?type=3&amp;permPage=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a few years ago<\/a>. At the time, a Google search of &ldquo;Do Nothing Day&rdquo; turned up very few results. Since then, <a href=\"http:\/\/community.today.com\/parentingteam\/post\/happy-do-nothing-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the idea<\/a> has <a href=\"http:\/\/nosidebar.com\/do-nothing-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">picked up steam<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which is a <strong>beautiful<\/strong> thing because &ldquo;busy&rdquo; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/scott-dannemiller\/busy-is-a-sickness_b_6761264.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has become a sickness<\/a> these days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here&rsquo;s the problem with most articles you&rsquo;ll find about how to have a Do Nothing Day: Literally doing nothing on your Do Nothing Day is <em>not<\/em> the goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/happyyouhappyfamily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/working-from-home-couch-med.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" data-pin-id=\"128000814387632841\" data-pin-description=\"Parents need recess, too! This means that sitting on the couch all day binge-watching <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0072KZ0Z6\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B0072KZ0Z6&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=idealmom-20&amp;linkId=Y5VLNFRO7E6WE7E2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">New Girl<\/a> won&rsquo;t add to your happiness. The research shows that watching TV, playing video games, or browsing the Internet <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bakadesuyo.com\/2012\/09\/how-can-you-make-your-weekends-more-awesome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">don&rsquo;t help your brain recuperate<\/a> from the stresses of your daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow these steps for a successful Do Nothing Day that actually <em>will<\/em> give your brain the break it needs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Think of one or two fun things you might do on your Do Nothing Day.<\/strong> Warning: Don&rsquo;t make a to-do list! Just brainstorm a handful of things that sound fun to you&mdash;ask your partner and\/or your kids, too, if they&rsquo;ll be joining you. But no TV, video games, or mindless surfing allowed. A few ideas for you:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Play a board game with your family&mdash;here&rsquo;s our <a href=\"https:\/\/happyyouhappyfamily.com\/board-games-for-all-ages\/\">epic list of the best family board games for all ages<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get outside and do something physical&mdash;a walk, a bike ride, or a quick game of basketball<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read a book or a magazine you&rsquo;ve been meaning to get to<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do a crossword puzzle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grab a stack of <a href=\"https:\/\/happyyouhappyfamily.com\/best-picture-books\/\">awesome picture books<\/a> or a fantastic chapter book, and have a mini <a href=\"https:\/\/happyyouhappyfamily.com\/raising-smart-kids\/\">read-aloud marathon with your kids<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bake something yummy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bust out a jigsaw puzzle for the whole family to solve together<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Listen to a new album from an artist you love<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Try out a new recipe that&rsquo;s too complicated for a weeknight<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Build an epic fort with your kids using cardboard boxes, sheets, and Christmas lights<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>When you wake up on your Do Nothing Day, pick one of those things you brainstormed.<\/strong> If none of them sound good now that the Day has arrived, no worries. Brainstorm something else.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Do that one thing and <em>only<\/em> that one thing.<\/strong> No multitasking. You gave yourself the break you so desperately needed.
